OnLine Images from the History of Medicine
Introduction
Welcome to the OnLine Images from the History of Medicine service.
This system provides access to
nearly 60,000 images
(reproducing photographs, artwork, and printed texts)
drawn from the extensive (and much larger) collection
of the History of Medicine Division at the US National Library of Medicine.
You may wish to view
a sampler of images
from the collection.
NOTE: if this is the first time you have used the system,
it is crucially important that you read the following document fully.
If you have enabled the viewing of inline images on your Web browser,
you will notice the information icon (a white letter "i" on a blue background)
appearing throughout the documents and forms being presented to you.
Selecting this icon will provide helpful information concerning the
part of the form/document that is nearest the icon.
CRUCIAL NOTE:
To use this system, you MUST be running
a World-Wide Web browser that correctly supports both
HyperText Markup Language (HTML) forms and "hidden fields" within forms.
The only browsers we are currently aware of that appear to do so are:
- NCSA Mosaic version 2.4 for X (for UNIX workstations using X Windows)
-
EINet's MacWeb (for the Macintosh), version 1.00A2
-
EINet's WinWeb (for the IBM PC running Microsoft Windows), version 1.0A2
-
NCC's Netscape
(versions 0.9 and later for UNIX have been used successfully at NLM;
we have received outside reports about successful use of 0.96 beta and 1.0
for Windows,
and 1.0N for the Macintosh)
-
WebExplorer for IBM OS/2
(according to outside reports, as yet unverified by NLM)
The University of Kansas'
lynx
program did work with this system at one time, but no longer appears to
do so (the lynx system is designed for character-based terminals;
allowing searching and catalog browsing, but not allowing image viewing).
As of this writing, the PC and Macintosh versions of NCSA Mosaic
will NOT support this system!
Please consider the above the definitive list
of usable browsers, disregarding any printed documentation you may
have from other sources, including NLM publications.
If are not certain that you have an appropriate browser,
examine the
help document
to see what the forms appear like when using NCSA Mosaic version 2.4 for X.
We welcome
comments from users
regarding WWW browsers that appear to work with OLI
(be certain to include information about where the code can be obtained,
the version number you are using, and the characteristics
of the platform the software is running on).
Prior to using this system, you may wish to examine the following
documents:
For purposes of studying how the system is used,
two types of log records are kept:
a list of hosts that have contacted the service,
and a record of the queries that have been posed to the system.
The records do not indicate who has performed specific queries.
Please send your comments, suggestions, or questions concerning this project
by using the
OnLine Images suggestion box.
Copyright Statement
"OnLine Images from the History of Medicine Division" (OLI/HMD) is
designed as a catalog to the prints and photographs collection of
the National Library of Medicine to assist users in finding illustrative
material for private study, scholarship, or research.
Some of the material in the collection is copyrighted.
Material known or suspected to be copyrighted is designated in OLI/HMD
with a diagonal line through the image.
Although the library staff have made an effort to identify copyrighted
materials, it is possible that one or more may not have been correctly identified.
It is the responsibility of anyone using the catalog or ordering reproductions
based on information in the catalog, to ensure that their use of this material
is in compliance with the U.S. copyright law (Title 17, United States Code).
[We anticipate that as NLM curators continue to gather and evaluate
copyright information,
currently barred images will be unbarred.]
