Sampras Advances; Enqvist Loses -
Second seed Pete Sampras advanced to the third round of the
U.S. Open yesterday, beating Jaime Yzaga of Peru, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3.
Yzaga ousted Sampras in last year's Open. The only upset
yesterday was ninth seed Thomas Enqvist of Sweden, who lost to
Byron Black of Zimbabwe, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Other matches
yesterday: third seed Thomas Muster of Austria beat Mark
Woodforde of Australia, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4; fifth seed Michael Chang
stopped Italy's Stefano Pescosolido, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4; and
eighth seed Michael Stich dropped Hernan Gumy of Argentina, 6-3,
1-6, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

Pierce Ousted from US Open -
On the women's side of the draw at the U.S. Open, top seed
Steffi Graf advanced easily to the fourth round yesterday,
beating Nathalie Tauziat of France, 6-3, 6-3. Defending champion
and third seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario also was untested in her
6-3, 6-0, victory over Maria Jose Gaidano of Argentina. The
biggest upset of the day saw sixth seed Mary Pierce lose to
American Amy Frazier, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). Other winners yesterday:
Gabriela Sabatini, Natasha Zvereva, Mary Jo Fernandez, and
Martina Hingis.

Yankees Edge A's; Royals Win -
Mike Stanley singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the
eighth inning as the New York Yankees defeated the Oakland
Athletics, 8-7, last night. The win was the fourth in a row for
the Yanks. In Arlington, Texas, the Kansas City Royals remained
in a tie with Seattle atop the wild card standings with a 5-2
victory over the slumping Texas Rangers. In other American
League games, Seattle beat Baltimore, 4-3; Chicago defeated
Toronto, 5-3; Minnesota downed Milwaukee, 9-5; Boston routed
California, 11-3.

Cards Top Rockies; Cubs Win -
Bernard Gilkey's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth
inning lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-4 victory last night
over the Colorado Rockies. The loss dropped the Rockies into a
tie with Philadelphia and Houston in the National League wild
card race. In Houston, Jeff Bagwell returned from a month on the
DL, driving in two runs as the Astros beat the Florida Marlins,
7-3. In other NL games, San Francisco edged New York, 6-5;
Chicago defeated Atlanta, 7-5; San Diego downed Philadelphia,
6-3; Montreal edged Los Angeles, 6-5; and Cincinnati demolished
Pittsburgh, 7-1.

Knicks, Heat Resolve Dispute -
The New York Knicks and Miami Heat have hammered out a
settlement on the tampering charges involving former Knicks
coach Pat Riley. The agreement calls for the Knicks to receive
$1 million and a 1996 first-round draft choice previously
acquired by Miami from the Atlanta Hawks. In return, the Knicks
will not block the Heat from signing Riley as coach.

NCAA Backs Down on Player Rule -
The NCAA has modified its new celebration rule to allow a
player to kneel for momentary prayer in the end zone following a
touchdown. The revision was announced one day after Liberty
University, which was founded by evangelist Jerry Falwell, filed
a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Lynchburg, Virginia seeking
a temporary restraining order that would prevent the NCAA from
enforcing the rule.

Dawson, Zokol Lead in Milwaukee -
Marco Dawson fired a 6-under-par 65 yesterday to climb into a
tie with first-round leader Richard Zokol after two rounds of
the Greater Milwaukee Open. Dawson, who has never won on the PGA
Tour, had eight birdies and two bogeys and is 7-under 135
through 36 holes. Zokol followed his opening round 65 with a
1-under 70. Robert Gamez is one-stroke behind the leaders at
6-under.

Smith Leads PGA Seniors -
Ben Smith holds a two-stroke lead after firing a 9-under-par
63 yesterday in the opening round of the PGA Seniors' Franklin
Quest Championship in Park City, Utah. Smith is two strokes
ahead of Larry Laoretti, who is alone in second place after
shooting a 7-under 65. Simon Hobday carded a 66 and is three
strokes behind Smith.

Bruins Sign Neely -
The Boston Bruins have re-signed right wing Cam Neely, who
was a restricted free agent, to a two-year contract. Financial
terms were not disclosed, but the contract calls for an
automatic one-year extension if certain conditions are met in
the second year. The four-time All-Star is known as one of the
top goal-scorers in the National Hockey League, though he has
battled injuries throughout his career.

Andretti Wins NASCAR Pole -
John Andretti has won the first pole of his Winston Cup
career with an event-record qualifying speed for tomorrow's
NASCAR Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. Andretti, the nephew
of retired great Mario Andretti, recorded a fast lap of 167.379
mph in yesterday's qualifying. Andretti's speed eclpsed Geoff
Bodine's record of 166.998 mph set last year. Ricky Rudd was
second in qualifying with a speed of 167.186 mph.
