Dawson, Zokol Lead Greater Milwaukee Open

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Reuter) -- Marco Dawson fired a 6-under-par 65 Friday to climb into a tie with first-round leader Richard Zokol after two rounds of the Greater Milwaukee Open at the Brown Deer Park Golf Course.

Dawson, who has never won on the PGA Tour, had eight birdies and two bogeys and is 7-under 135 through 36 holes. Between the seventh and ninth holes Dawson sunk birdie putts of 50, 12, and 20 feet.

``I missed the greens on the first two holes but then everything straightened out,'' said Dawson. ``There are no tricks to this course, everything is like it should be.''

Zokol followed his opening round 65 with a 1-under 70. Zokol birdied three of the first eight holes but played the back nine in 1-over.

Zokol, currently 246th on the money list and a winner of this tournament in 1992, would need a top finish to automatically regain his card.

``The good thing about teeing off early on Thursday is that you can get off to a great start,'' said Zokol. ``The greens are at their worst on Friday afternoon.''

Robert Gamez is one-stroke behind the leaders at 6-under 136. Gamez bogeyed the last hole when he three-putted from 30 feet.

Curtis Strange, Joe Acosta, and Peter Jordan are tied for fourth, two shots behind Zokol and Dawson. Strange has not won a tournament since capturing the 1989 U.S. Open and has come under scrutiny after being named to the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Mike Springer is the defending champion. Springer has struggled ths year, fallng out of the top 150 in earnngs and is without a top-10 finish. He is seeking to become the first ever repeat champion of the Greater Milwaukee Open.

Springer failed to make the cut, posting consecutive 75's.
