NEW YORK (Reuter) -- Top seed Steffi Graf of Germany advanced Friday to the fourth round of the U.S. Open Tennis Championships at New York with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Nathalie Tauziat of France.
Defending champion and third seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain needed just 63 minutes to defeat Maria Jose Gaidano of Argentina, 6-3, 6-0.
Sixth seed Mary Pierce, an American who plays out of France, became the highest women seeded player to lose, dropping her match with American Amy Frazier, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), in 87 minutes.
Pierce was frustrated with a number of calls throughout the match, particularly during the final tiebreak. Her final shot was long, but Frazier returned to be safe before the frustrated Pierce swatted the dead ball into the stands. Pierce committed an astounding 46 unforced errors to 26 for Frazier, who made the fourth round for the first time in her career.
Graf has beaten Tauziat in each of the 18 meetings between the players and has never dropped a set to her, winning today in only 62 minutes. Graf, who improved to 35-1 this year, will play Chanda Rubin, who beat Gigi Fernandez, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 in a battle of unseeded Americans.
``I feel comfortable playing her,'' said Graf of Tauziat before looking ahead to her next opponent. ``Chanda has been playing very well the past couple of months.''
Graf's overpowering forehand produced 16 winners to only two for Tauziat, who added 30 unforced errors and had her serve broken four times. Graf has advanced to the quarterfinals every year since losing in the first round in 1984 as a 15-year-old. She has gone on to the semifinals in each of those years with the exception of 1992.
Ninth seed Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina needed only 68 minutes to crush Sabine Appelmans of Belgium, 6-1, 6-1. Sabatini is trying to advance to the quarterfinals for the ninth straight year.
Natasha Zvereva of Belarus, the 12th seed, beat Ann Grossman of the Unted States, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) and number 14 Mary Joe Fernandez beat Katrina Adams, 6-3, 6-1.
Fourteen-year-old Czech Martina Hingis needed three sets before advancing with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Canada's Patricia Hy.
