NEW YORK (Reuter) -- Second seed Pete Sampras gained a measure of revenge Friday night with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jaime Yzaga of Peru in the U.S. Tennis Championships.
Yzaga eliminated an ailing Sampras from last year's tournament, capturing the decisive fifth set, 7-5, as Sampras battled foot injuries and cramps.
A healthy Sampras raced through the first set in 21 minutes tonight, serving well and moving well around the court. He broke the Peruvian in th second and fifth games before closing out the set with a service winner.
Yzaga began to find the range with his passing shots in the second set, but he had no answer for Sampras' big serve, falling 6-4 in 41 minutes. Sampras took the final four games of the match, breaking Yzaga in the seventh and ninth games. He closed out the match with a big forehand winner.
Sampras had 16 aces, lost only 15 points on serve during the whole match and never faced a break point. He will face hard-serving Australian Mark Philippoussis in the third round.
Thomas Muster of Austria, the third seed in the men's draw, dropped the first set, 4-6, to Mark Woodforde of Australia before storming back to win the next three sets, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the third round.
In men's second-round action Friday, fifth-seeded American Michael Chang dropped the first set to Italy's Stefano Pescosolido, 4-6, but rallied for a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory.
Chang, whose first-round match was just 63 minutes, needed two hours, 47 minutes and his improved serve led to an uncharacteristically high 19 aces.
Eighth seed Michael Stich of Germany needed five sets before advancing past Hernan Gumy of Argentina, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, but ninth seed Thomas Enqvist of Sweden was not as lucky. Enqvist was upset by Byron Black of Zimbabwe, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Black won the ninth game of the final set on his eighth match point of the game, acing his serve.
Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands, the 12th seed, ousted American amateur Justin Gimelstob, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. Gimelstob, an 18-year-old New Jerseyan, was the lowest-ranked player in the draw at 1,154th.
Americans Jim Courier and Todd Martin won in straight sets today in second round matches. Courier, who is seeded 14th, defeated Canadian Sebastien Lareau, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, and Martin, who is seeded 15th, beat Sweden's Mats Wilander, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5.
