ST. LOUIS (Reuter) -- Bernard Gilkey's two-out single scored Jose Oliva with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Colorado Rockies, 5-4, Friday.

Ray Lankford tied the game when he led off the eighth with a solo homer, his 16th, off Curt Leskanic (5-2).

The loss dropped the Rockies into a tie with Philadelphia and Houston in the National League wild card race.

Rich DeLucia (7-6) notched the victory in relief, pitching a scoreless eighth, striking out one.

In San Francisco, Glenallen Hill's two-out solo homer in the bottom of the ninth lifted the San Francisco Giants to a 6-5 victory over the New York Mets.

In San Diego, pinch-hitter Archi Cianfrocco capped a five-run fifth with a three-run homer and Fernando Valenzuela pitched 5 2/3 innings to win his third straight decision as the San Diego Padres defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-3.

In Houston, Jeff Bagwell drove in two runs in his first game in over a month and Dave Magadan had three hits and two RBI to lead the Houston Astros to a 7-3 victory over the Florida Marlins.

Bagwell, playing his first game since breaking his left wrist on July 30th, had a bases-loaded walk in the third and an RBI single in a three-run seventh.

The Astros went 9-20 during Bagwell's absence.

In Atlanta, Shawon Dunston had a pair of RBI singles and Jim Bullinger snapped a three-game losing skid as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Atlanta Braves, 7-5.

Bullinger (11-5) allowed five runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings, while walking three and striking out four. He hadn't won since August 11th at San Francisco.

In Cincinnati, Pete Schourek scattered five hits over 7 2/3 innings for his 15th win and Bret Boone went 3-for-3 with two RBI, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 7-1 triumph over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Schourek (15-7) joined Atlanta's Greg Maddux as the National League's only 15-game winners. He allowed one run with two walks and four strikeouts for his eighth straight home win.

The loss was Pittsburgh's eighth in 10 games.

In Los Angeles, David Segui hit a three-run hmer to highlight a four-run third inning, leading the Montreal Expos to a 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, who tied a club-record with seven errors.
