Smith Leads Seniors' Franklin Quest Tournament

PARK CITY, Utah (Reuter) -- Ben Smith holds a two-stroke lead after tying a course record with a 9-under-par 63 Friday in the opening round of the $600,000 Franklin Quest Championship at Park Meadows Golf Club.

Smith tied Dave Stockton for the course record that was set in 1993. Smith, wo recorded five birdies on the front nine, is two strokes ahead of Larry Laoretti, who is alone in second place after shooting a 7-under 65.

``The last 63 I had was at Rancho Park last year,'' Smith said. ``I'd love to win but the odds are stacked against me. This is just one round and that's the way I look at it.''

``The key to this course is the par threes,'' said Laoretti, who birdied eight of the last 15 holes after bogeying the par three third. ``If you can keep it around even or one-under, you can do well. I'm happy with my score. I drove the ball straight, but not far or long.''

Simon Hobday carded a 66 and is three strokes behind Smith. Hobday birdied three holes in a row from the sixth to the eighth.

``I played well,'' Hobday said. ``I hit every green in regulation and got on in two on five par-fives. The wind came up on the back nine, but didn't take advantage of it at 17.''

Gay Brewer and Bob Viele each shot 5-under 67s, while Dick Goetz carded a 68.

Defending champion Tom Weiskopf, who is among a group of nine that are 3-under, returned to the scene of an emotional victory. While claiming his first Senior Tour victory, his long-time friend and fellow golfer, Bert Yancey, died suddenly after competing in the first round of the event.
