Winner - IBM Voice Type
Voice Type from IBM allows users to command their PC with oral commands and dictate, for example, text directly into a word processor. Although there are at the moment some restrictions to the way that the user has to talk to the computer, voicetype marks the beginning of a new era of people-computer interaction.

Finalist - RedHat Linux 4.1.
With this kernel version, Linux has grown up from being a programming freak's playground to a stable and easy to install operating system. The most important improvements are the expanded IDE- and modular SCSI-device support, the support for removable media and the extensive support for Ethernet cards. Many features of the Linux kernel can now be built as loadable modules. Linux can dynamically insert and remove kernel modules as the operating system requires. Many software companies will soon be releasing Linux versions of their own software. And as a final bonus - Linux is still free.
