    The activities of the Daimler-Benz Group in the areas of aircraft, space, defense and propulsion systems have been concentrated into the Daimler-Benz Aerospace AG (Dasa, Munich) ever since the latter's creation in May 19, 1989. In 1994, the Dasa business year showed a sales turnover of DM 17.4 billion. At the year-end of 1994, the company had 75,581 employees. Daimler-Benz AG (Stuttgart) is the majority partner in the company with a 93.8 percent share.

    Companies, so rich in tradition like Dornier, Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm GmbH (MBB), MTU Motoren- und Turbinen-Union, and Telefunken Systemtechnik (TST) have been consolidated and reorganised within the Dasa group to ensure the capability of the German aerospace industry to compete in the international markets.

    The aerospace industry is a technological key industry, having a decisive influence on the competitive capability of the highly industrialised countries and their economic future. Since this industry incorporates a large number of advanced technologies, such as microelectronics, materials technology, microsystem technology, sensor technology, data processing, and the related know-how in the fields of production and integration, it is giving fresh impetus to and paving the way for the technological progress in many other domains.

    Daimler-Benz Aerospace is a world-wide operating company. It is an equal partner in a large number of international cooperations and alliances (e.g. Airbus, Ariane, Eurocopter, and several engine programmes, among which are V2500, Eurojet, ADP). Daimler-Benz Aerospace is making 75 percent of its total sales turnover by means of international cooperation programs.

    The know-how and activities of the original companies have been assigned to Dasa's strategic business groups of Aircraft, Space Systems, Defense and Civil Systems, and Propulsion Systems to concentrate the technological potential of the company in a market-oriented manner.

    Within a period of only two years, the original companies were integrated into Daimler-Benz Aerospace. By amalgamating TST and MBB with the activities of Dasa in 1992, the integration process was largely completed. The "new" Daimler-Benz Aerospace, the operative core company, still has four important subsidiaries which, due to strategic reasons, will remain independent units: Daimler-Benz Aerospace Airbus, Dornier, and MTU.

    President and Chief Executive Officer of Daimler-Benz Aerospace is Dr. Manfred Bischoff, who is also a member of the Board of Management of Daimler-Benz AG. Dr. Wolfgang Piller (Finance and Controlling), Werner Heinzmann (Space Systems, Defense and Civil Systems), Dr. Dietrich Russell (Aircraft), and Dr. Hartwig Knitter (Personnel) are also members of the Dasa board of management.
