The Propulsion Systems Group is headed by Rainer Hertrich, Chief Executive Officer of MTU Motoren- und Turbinen-Union München GmbH.

The Propulsion Systems Group is responsible for the development, manufacture, and support of aeroengines for passenger and cargo aircraft, helicopters, turboprops, combat and training aircraft. The Group is an active partner in international cooperation programs to develop and produce civilian and military turbojet and turboshaft engines.

In the field of aeroengines for airliners and business aircraft, MTU cooperates in the main with the renowned US engine manufacturers Pratt & Whitney and General Electric. In the field of military aircraft, MTU cooperates exclusively with European partners. In March 1991, MTU and Pratt & Whitney signed an agreement, saying that the two companies will treat each other as "preferred partner" as far as commercial programs are concerned.

At the Hanover-Langenhagen site, MTU Maintenance GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler-Benz Aerospace, is engaged in the support, maintenance, and repair of large commercial-aircraft engines. Since July, 1991, Luftfahrttechnik Ludwigsfelde GmbH in Brandenburg/ Eastern Germany is also part of the Propulsion Systems Aircraft Division. By the name of MTU Ludwigsfelde, the company was integrated into the aeroengine maintenance and repair activities of MTU and is now responsible for engines in the low thrust class.

Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) and MTU established a European maintenance center (CSC) at Ludwigsfelde, covering the entire servicing, including maintenance and repair of all PW&C engines being operated in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
