Sweeping; it's not just for custodians anymore.
The Eagle baseball team experienced both ends of it in two
doubleheaders last weekend; sweeping UW-Superior on Friday and getting
swept away by River Falls last Saturday.
Against UW-Superior, the Eagles won a pair of close games. The
first game started with Superior getting on the scoreboard first with
a pair of runs off freshman pitcher Joe Ohm. Ohm then settled down giving up
only one run over the next five innings.
The Eagles fought back with three runs in the third and one run in the
fifth to take the lead. The Eagles won the game 5-3 as Ohm picked up the
win.
Jay Katzenmeyer and Matt Goebel remained red hot for UW-L.
Katzenmeyer picked up three hits in the game, while Goebel collected two
hits and two base on balls. Goebel also recorded his 100th hit during the
game, becoming the thirteenth player in UW-L history to do so.
In the second game, UW-L once again found themselves trailing on the
scoreboard. They were down 5-1 going into the bottom of the ninth when
the Eagles rallied for five wins to win 6-5. UW-L scored the winning run
on a suicide squeeze bunt by Kelly Olson that allowed Jay Katzenmeyer to score.
Jeremy Brach was the winning pitcher for UW-L, pitching two and two
thirds innings of scoreless relief.
Goebel again led the UW-L offense with two hits and one RBI against
the Yellow Jackets in the second game. Olson also had two hits for the Eagles
UW-L was defeated 5-4 and 10-9 by UW-River Falls in two games on Saturday.
In the first game, UW-L led 4-3 going into the eighth inning. River
Falls scored one in the eighth and one in the ninth to win 5-4.
Matt Roffers knocked in two runs with a two-run homer for the Eagles.
Olson and Chad Ducklow also picked up a pair of hits for the Eagles.
The Eagles found themselves up 9-3 going into the seventh inning in
the second game, but the wheels fell off for UW-L as the Falcons exploded
for seven runs in the last three innings.
Rick Bell had three hits for the Eagles in the game. Katzenmeyer and
Bob Clement also had two hits apiece for the Eagles.
UW-L is now 10-12 overall and 2-2 in WSUC North Division play.
The Eagles host a doubleheader on Friday versus Stout. On Saturday,
the team travels to UW-Superior. Both double-headers are scheduled to
begin at 1 p.m.
