Baseball Team Goes 5-6

by Kelly Sullivan, Racquet Sports Editor

The Eagles got the seaon started off on the right foot, opening with a 4-3 victory
over Massachusettes-Dartmouth in Southern California over Spring Break. The team played
eleven games, recording a 5-6 record after going 3-1 in a California Invitational
Tournament last weekend.

After their first victotry, the Eagles dropped their next five games, losing two games
to Biola University, the back end of the double header against Dartmouth, and games
against Concordia of California and Concordia-Moorhead.

UW-L bounced back from their losses to defeat Dartmouth in a rubber match, 4-3. After
a loss to Claremont on March 16, the team defeated Occidental College 5-4 in the
tournament. The Eagles soared over Ponoma-Pitzer and Occidental College once again to
close off with a three game winning streak.

Juniors Kelly Olson and Matt Goebel were named to the all tournament team for UW-L.
Olson, an infielder for the Eagles, hit 14-42 for a .417 average last week. Goebel, an
outfielder and designated hitter for the Eagles, hit 17-41 with a .455 average.

New head coach Mike Stuhr was pleased with how his team played.

"We got better as the week went along, which is a good sign." Stuhr said. "We also
handled ourselves agaisnt teams which had played more games than we had."

Most of the California schools came into competition with about 20 to 25 games of
experience, according to Stuhr.

The baseball team is scheduled to play Hamline University at the Metrodome in
Minneapolis on Sunday March 31.
