Baseball Team Splits Games With Winona

The University of Wisconsin La Crosse's men's baseball team won one
game of a doubleheader against Winona State on Saturday to move their
season record to 6-9.
UW-L won the opening game of the doubleheader 8-1. Jeep Huelskamp led
UW-L to the victory by pitching a complete game one-hitter. this was the
first one-hitter by an Eagle pitcher in 11 seasons.
The Eagles only led in the game 1-0 until the fifth inning when they
struck for three runs. They addd four more runs in the sixth to put Winona
State away.
Kelly Olson had a career game against Winona. The junior infielder
collected five hits in the first game of the double-header. Olson also
scored two runs and had two runs batted in.
Matt Goebel also added three hits for UW-L in the first game.
In the second game, the Eagles were shutout by Ryan Johnson of Winona
State. Johnson overpowered UW-L with the strikeouts. He limited UW-L to
two hits in seven innings.
Eagle pitcher Andy Hanson took the loss. He gave up three runs and
eight hits in six innings. Winona State scored all three of their runs in
the third inning against Hanson.
Olson and Bob Clement were the only Eagles to pick up a hit in game two.
Olson was named the WSUC Player of the Week last week by goiong 5-for-5
against Winona State.
On Saturday, April 13, the Eagles open their home season against
Concordia-St.Paul. This will be the second time the Eagles and Comets have
met. The two teams' only other meeting came in 1994. UW-L defeated
Concordia St.Paul 6-1 on its spring trip in Florida. Game one is scheduled
to begin at 1 p.m. at the Baseball Field at North Campus.
On Moday, April 15, the Eagles travel to UW-Platteville for a
doubleheader. the Eagles and the Pioneers are meeting for the first time
since the 1991 season when they met twice during the Eagles spring trip.
This will be the 15th and 16th meetings between the two teams since the
1970 season. UW-L leads the series 11-3, winning the last four games of
the series.
