The Internet

Preface

This is an adaptation of lectures presented by R. P. C. Rodgers in the June 1993 Medical Informatics Course offered by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the Woods Hole Marine Biology Laboratory (MBL), An extensively revised version, incorporating materials from S. Srinivasan and T. Rutkowski of the Internet Society, was presented at the Spring Congress of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) in San Francisco in May 1994 and at the MBL course in June 1994 (see photo of faculty and attendees). The material serves as an introduction to the history, technical underpinnings, functional capabilities, and future promise of the Internet. Given its origin as a set of overhead projector overlays, its content is occasionally telegraphic; this problem will be addressed as editing continues. This online tutorial is intended to remain a "living document," improving as time permits.
