Welcome to the RailServer Main Page

(These pages are available in German, too.)
Sorry, the system didn't work correctly while I was on holiday (queries haven't been answered since April 8th). It should do now...

  • What is the RailServer?

The RailServer is a program which can find German railway connections for you. The whole thing is automatic and will answer within 6 hours (average; the maximum time is 14 hours) of receiving your query.
The mail server has a data base of all German railway stations plus about 4000 other stations in Europe, and will find any valid German connection for you. (The non-German connections are limited to a few trains.) It will give you the details you need, including fares.

Operating the server is quite easy. Just fill out the query form (see 'WWW Gateway' link above). Or, if you prefer using the server by mail (some WWW browesers don't support forms), send a mail to rail@rz.uni-karlsruhe.de containing the following lines in the message body:
    #FROM: somestation
    #TO: someotherstation
    #DATE: dd-mm-yy
    #TIME: hh:mm
... and you will receive a mail listing all the train connections that leave within approx. 2 hours of the starting time specified. Of course, you can also search for connections that arrive within a specified time etc. - read the help file (see hyperlink above) for details.

If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me. Particularly, if someone would like to

  • improve this page using some images, or
  • create some information about railroading in other European countries so that we can build a 'railroading in Europe' information table,
  • do not hesitate to send a mail :-)...

If you want to include links to the RailServer in your own HTML documents, I'd be happy if you dropped me a note, and I suggest you use the following link:
    http://www.uni-karlsruhe.de/~rail
This is an alias which is always guaranteed to point to the right place. Furthermore, it is supposed to autoamtically detect your language (English or German) and display the appropiate pages.
