Known Bugs in the Alpha 3 Win32 Release

This document lists only bugs specific to the Win32 release. See the Known Bugs list for bugs common to all releases.

Major bugs in the HotJava Alpha 3 Win32 Release

HotJava/Win32 crash bug.
On some machine configurations, the browser will occasionally crash in the middle of reading an html page. A dialog box pops up with the following text: "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." It does not always crash on the same page but on different pages at different times.
Unfortunately, this problem doesn't show up in the debug version (which we can debug) but rather only in the non-debug version (which we can't debug). There is no known workaround.
HotJava/Win32 deadlock.
There is a fairly major well-understood deadlock condition in this release of HotJava/Win32. If HotJava/Win32 deadlocks, it's likely this is the cause. The deadlock involves applets and the thread that delivers events from Windows. To minimize the occurrence of this deadlock, you should avoid resizing HotJava unnecessarily, especially during the loading of applets. Also, turning off "full-drag" helps. We will be fixing this deadlock in an upcoming release.
To turn off full-drag, go to the ControlPanel and open the Desktop applet. In the "Applications" group box, uncheck "Full Drag".

Dialog box layout problems.: The Java dialog layout classes are currently not screen-resolution independent. As a result you may discover some buttons near the bottom of a dialog box that are partially or wholly obscured. Worse, if a status bar at the bottom is completely obscured, you may miss an important message. E.g. in the "mail to" dialog box, pressing send may result in an error message. If you can't see the error message, you'll be confused as to why the dialog box won't go away.
Layout problems in html pages with forms.: If you have full-drag turned on, and you resize HotJava/Win32 while it's displaying an html page with forms, you'll discover that the controls get moved in random places. To turn off full-drag, go to the ControlPanel and open the Desktop applet. In the "Applications" group box, uncheck "Full Drag".
Native methods: The documentation for native methods is currently broken and is undergoing revision.
Mail problems.: HotJava/Win32 currently has problems talking to certain SMTP servers. If you can help us debug this, please let us know.
Minor UI problems: Comboboxes with a drop-down list don't close themselves if you click on the arrow.; Double-clicking in edit controls are ignored. Double-click should select a word.; No keyboard shortcuts are implemented (including alt-keys).
Note: The win32 release runs only on Windows NT 3.5 and Windows 95. It will not run on Windows 3.1 or 3.11.
