Welcome to the Sue Naylor Laboratory Home Page

Sue Naylor's lab is located in the Department of Cellular and Structural Biology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, TX.

Here are our major ongoing projects. Click on any of the highlighted topics for more information.

The Chromosome 3 Project.

Our laboratory with those of Peter O'Connell and Robin Leach are developing maps and contigs of chromosome 3. The Chromosome 3 Database gives public access to the maps and data from our project. A part of the database is an integrated YAC data set of from our laboratories, Robert Gemmill and Harry Drabkin in Denver, David Housman and Vince Stanton at MIT as well as the CEPH and Whitehead data. You will also find current radiation hybrid and genetic linkage maps of chromosome 3 as well as information about STSs for this chromosome. This work is funded by NCHGR (P01 HG00470).

Tumor Suppressor Gene on Chromosome 3p21.

We have had a long term interest in the isolation of a tumor suppressor gene on chromosome 3p21. This region of chromosome 3 is lost from one homolog in nearly all small cell lung cancer tumors. We have isolated a fragment of chromosome 3 which suppresses tumor growth. Sequences from this region were used to identify homozygous deletions in small cell lung cancer. Positional cloning tactics has led to the isolation of a candidate tumor suppressor gene. Our experiments are focused on functional proof for tumor suppression and the mechanism of action of this gene. This work is funded by the NCI (R01 CA56626).
