ESP - Electronic Stability Program

For the S-class, Mercedes-Benz engineers have developed intelligent traction control systems which further improve handling safety and ride comfort. One of the most important innovations is the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) which has been standard on the S 600 coupé since April 1995 and will at a later stage also become available for other S-class and SL-class models. The Electronic Stability Program represents a new milestone in the field of handling safety. By selectively actuating the front and/or rear brakes, the system reduces the danger of skidding while cornering and keeps the car safely on course. Within the physical limits, it counteracts both wrong reactions on the part of the driver and swerving caused by black ice or wet surfaces. ESP is always ready for action and also improves handling safety when braking, accelerating and coasting. Acceleration skid control (ASR) is integrated into ESP.
