Major development projects

Passenger Cars

New modular system for traction control, directional stability and road holding

• electronic traction system (ETS) fitted as standard equipment in the 6-cylinder S-class models, available optionally for the C-class and 6-cylinder SL models
• improved acceleration skid control (ASR) fitted as standard in all V8 and V12 models
• World premiere: electronic stability program (ESP) fitted for the first time in the S 600 coupé (as standard)

Planning and launch of the new E-class featuring:

• elegant design with new twin headlamp face
• three attractive equipment and appointment lines: Classic, Elegance and Avantgarde
• 4-valve petrol and diesel engines with optimised exhaust emissions and fuel economy
• newly developed turbodiesel with direct injection

Commercial Vehicles

• New "Sprinter" van series (T1N) ranging from 2.5 to 4.6 t, introduced as the successor to the T1 and the MB 100 D
• Medium series Unimog fitted with EURO 2 engines from the 300 series (initially available optionally)
• O 407 regular service country buses with EURO 2 engine
