Engineering

The attractive exterior of the new E-class conceals intelligent engineering. Beneath the bonnet, the engines of the new E-class are as clean and economical as they are dynamic. We are also pleased to be able to present a new version in the E-class: our first direct injection turbodiesel, which combines tremendous performance with superb economy.

The E 290 turbodiesel 5-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection, turbocharger and intercooler develops its maximum torque of 300 Nm at only 1800/min, with considerably reduced fuel consumption into the bargain.

For the E 420 model we have developed a new electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmission with torque converter lock-up clutch. It ensures low fuel consumption, smooth gear shifts and low maintenance costs. The new E-class saloons are fitted as standard with 5-speed manual transmissions, the E 320 with a 4-speed automatic transmission.

The new dual-wishbone front suspension makes for even more refined handling and better safety. Each of the front wheels is located by two triangular links, giving more precise wheel location and greater ride comfort. Undesired self-steering effects at the drive wheels are eliminated by the further improved multi-link independent rear suspension, with each of the rear wheels located by five links.

There is new technology for manoeuvring too: the parameter steering available optionally reduces the steering forces at low speeds. This means that the steering effort required for parking, for example, is substantially less, whilst it becomes progressively greater at increasing speeds.

To give you better vision, the Avantgarde is fitted as standard with xenon headlamps and electronically controlled dynamic headlamp range adjustment (available optionally for the other lines). This automatically adjusts the headlamp range to match the load and the style of driving, thereby improving visibility and reducing the dazzle experienced by on-coming traffic.

Available as optional equipment for the new E-class is the Auto-Pilot-System APS - a combination of a stereo car radio with RDS and a CD-ROM drive, which guides the driver reliably via the shortest route to his destination within Germany, by means of information provided visually on a display and acoustically via loudspeakers.

With the arrival of the new E-class, the days of mechanical or automatic radio aerials are over. The new antenna integrated into the rear screen as standard, provides an intelligent solution to the problems of maintenance, wind noise and, not least, vandalism.
