European Software Excellence Awards
MAC - Techincal Excellence
Winner - CodeWarrior 11
Our first finalist, CodeWarrior 11 by MetroWerks, is an integrated development environment which consists of a project manager, text editor, class browser, various compilers/linkers and a debugger. It has become the premier programming tool - users can program in a choice of languages (C, C++, Object Pascal and Java) and target multiple platforms (Macos and Windows). Of particular use were the PowerPlant application framework and the object orientated graphical editor, Constructor. These dramatically reduce application development time leaving the user an opportunity to concentrate on the more esoteric aspects of coding arcana. CodeWarrior 11 was supplied on two CD-Roms which included the IDE, add-ons, third party products, extensive samples and exhaustive documentation.

Finalist - PageMaker 6.5
After its acquisition of PageMaker great things were expected of Adobe - and with the release of version 6.5 these promises are being answered. With an eye to rationalising the interface and homogenizing the way tools work, Adobe has made PageMaker, Illustrator and Photoshop more unified. This DTP application, famous for its technical advances since its earliest days, has responded to the threat of its competitors by adding more features and capabilities - frames, layers, PDF and HTML creation and export, even graphics conversion...this programme tackles so many tasks with an assured feeling and in the few cases in which help was required, its on-line system was more than adequate. Really requiring a PowerPC chip and a healthy RAM allocation to give of its best, Adobe Pagemaker 6.5 is a really useful addition to any desktop.

Finalist - QuarkImmedia
Quark adds to its market-leading XPress with the new Immedia 1.0 multimedia authoring XTension. Our evalution of this product showed how capable and well thought out it was. Quark has taken its time to produce a polished and powerful addition to its DTP giant and it shows. With extensive on-line help and excellent documentation, Immedia delivers what all the past demonstrations have promised - an easy to use but very robust means of creating multimedia presentations and Internet-ready documents. ITs performance requires a fairly well specified PowerPC machine and the most recent version of XPress but, given these, the program really came into its own.
