A high technology that can be used to monitor the environment from space, for example, can now also be used for other engineering applications. Compact, highly sensitive gallium-arsenide-based radar sensors are ideally suited for use in industrial applications for the non-contact measurement of distances, speeds, or liquid levels. The tiny extremely-high frequency ICs required here were developed at Daimler-Benz research institutes and can operate at frequencies of up to 100 billion oscillations per second. This technology permits the production of monolithic integrated radar sensors at competitive costs. The technical advantages of radar sensors over other systems, such as lasers or ultrasound, lie in their ability to measure very precisely - even under extreme environmental conditions.
High temperatures, dust, steam, or high pressures do not adversely affect the reading. For example, liquid levels in process or storage tanks can be accurately measured to the millimeter - and that from a distance of 30 meters. Daimler-Benz Aerospace will present such a system in action at the Hannover Trade Fair Industrie '95.
