Infra-red locking system
The locking system with infra-red remote control and immobiliser permits central locking and unlocking of your vehicle from a distance of up to 6 metres. The locking system has two monitoring lights: the red light for closing and green for unlocking. |
Interior lighting
To spare you the inconvenience of searching in the dark for the ignition lock, many of our models feature a delay relay which ensures that the interior light stays on a few seconds after the door has been closed. |
Multi-link independent rear suspension
The multi-link independent rear suspension prevents any undesirable self-steering effects at the driven wheels. Each of the rear wheels is located by five links, which are connected to the axle carrier by rubber mountings. The rear wheels are thus always kept at the right angle to the road and to the direction of travel, even when the springs are compressed. The geometry of the multi-link independent rear suspension, which is incorporated into every Mercedes in current production, has been further developed for the C-class. |
Oxidation catalyst and exhaust gas recirculation
The oxidation catalyst reduces the emission of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons by diesel engines. Particulate emission is also reduced. The oxidation catalyst is combined with exhaust gas recirculation, which diverts part of the exhaust stream back to the engine via the intake manifold. This reduces the amount of oxygen used in the combustion process and thus also reduces peak temperatures and nitrous oxide emission.

Paintwork
Our paintshops are in the process of going over to environment-friendly water-based paints. In these paints, the conventional organic solvents are largely replaced by water, thus reducing the use of organic solvents to an absolute minimum. Paint and solvent residues are filtered out of the waste air and burnt, the resulting heat being used in a heat exchanger to heat the production shops. In a few years' time, all our paints will be water-based, with no concessions on quality for you, the customer. |
Petrol engines: 4-cylinder
These in-line petrol engines with four valves per cylinder and all-electronic injection and ignition housed in one control unit feature a cross-flow cylinder head and two overhead camshafts. Some models have a variable inlet camshaft, which gives higher torque even at lower engine speeds. The excellent mass balancing ensures smooth running.

Petrol engines: 6-cylinder
Mercedes-Benz 6-cylinder in-line engines are equipped with all-electronic engine control, 4 valves per cylinder, two overhead camshafts, variable resonance intake manifold and variable inlet camshaft. Secondary air injection further reduces pollutant emissions. Smooth running and enormous torque, even at low engine speeds, are among the hallmarks of the 6-cylinder engines. Nevertheless, fuel consumption remains astonishingly good.
This excellent balance between power and consumption is due not least to a perfect interplay between the microprocessor-controlled ignition system, the idle speed control and the injection system.

Power-assisted steering
The power-assisted steering is operational whenever the engine is running. This makes your work considerably easier when parking and manoeuvring. A hydraulic steering shock absorber reduces the transmission of vibrations and impacts to the steering wheel.

PTS
The Parktronic System (PTS) operates on the echo-sounding principle. With help from ultrasound signals that are reflected by obstacles, the electronic system calculates the distance between vehicle and obstacle. The ultrasound parking aid with six sensors in the front bumper and four in the rear assist in driving manoeuvers in tight spaces up to a speed of 10 km/h.

Recyclable materials
Our research into new recycling methods aimed at avoiding waste and conserving resources has been highly successful. We simply cannot afford to throw materials away if there is any chance of reusing them. Recyclable waste from our production processes for example is not dumped but strictly segregated into different types of material with a view to high-quality recycling.
The recycled material is then returned to the production chain. Wherever possible, we are already manufacturing entire components - for example some footmats, moulding strips and linings - from recycled material. Just how far ecology can also make economic sense is shown by our catalytic converter recycling system whereby such valuable raw materials as platinum and rhodium are recovered.
