Quick Questions?
If you have questions about Yahoo!, check and see if they're
answered in the Frequently
Asked Questions list!
Yahoo! is a searchable, browsable hierarchical index of the
Internet.
For anyone who cares, here's
what yahoo really means.
Yahoo! was started by David Filo and Jerry Yang,
self-proclaimed yahoos.
Today, Yahoo! is a
privately funded company providing the Yahoo! service.
Searching vs. Browsing
Searching Yahoo!
If you know exactly what you're looking for, try using
Yahoo! search. Specify
a keyword or set of keywords, and Yahoo! will search its entire database
to find listings that match the keys you provide. You'll find a search
form or search button at the top of every Yahoo! page.
- Setting Search Options
Unless you specify otherwise, Yahoo! will search titles,
URLs
, and comments to find listings that contain all of your keywords.
Also, Yahoo! will not pay attention to case (e.g., "Dow Jones" is
treated just like "dow jones") and it will stop after it finds 100
matches.
If you want to customize your search, you'll find several options
on the Yahoo! Search page :
- restrict your search to titles, URLs, and/or comments;
- make your search case-sensitive or case-insensitive;
- specify whether you want matches to contain all of your keywords
or at least one of your keywords;
- specify whether your keywords should be considered as substrings
or whole words;
- limit the number of matches found or choose to find all matches.
- Search Results
Yahoo! searches retrieve three different kinds of information:
- Yahoo! categories that match your keywords,
- End-sites that match your keywords,
- The Yahoo! categories where those end-sites are listed.
This way, you can choose to go directly to retrieved sites, or browse
around relevant Yahoo! categories for related information. Which leads
us to the next topic...
Browsing Yahoo!
If you don't have a particular internet site in mind, but want
to "surf" around to see what's out there, Yahoo! is the place
to start. From the top page,
just click on a topic you want to browse and you're on your way!
- The Menubar
From Yahoo!'s top
page menubar, you'll find links to each of the
Yahoo! Features:
What's New,
What's Cool,
What's Popular , and
Random Link. The top page menubar also takes you to the latest news
Headlines
(updated hourly!).
To return to the top page from any other Yahoo! page, just
click on "Yahoo!" in the menubar.
Also, you can choose from the following menubar functions from
any Yahoo! page:
- Write Us :
a form interface to mail feedback and suggestions to the Yahoo!
administrators. If your browser does not support forms, please send
us email at admin@yahoo.com.
- Add Me :
to submit your own URL to be added to Yahoo!. We will validate
the URL that is submitted and incorporate it into our hierarchy.
- Info :
for help and information about Yahoo!. From here you can get to
information about Yahoo!
Corporation including announcements, press releases, contact
information and advertising information;
help using Yahoo!
(this page); the Yahoo! FAQ
, and an explanation of the
Yahoo! Features.
- Navigating Around
Throughout Yahoo!, categories are marked in bold text
while end-sites are listed in plain text. To move down into the subject
hierarchy, simply click on a category and the next level of the hierarchy
will be displayed. To move up in the hierarchy, click on the appropriate
category in the page's heading: e.g., to move up one level
from
Business and Economy:Markets and Investments:Stocks, just click
on "Markets and Investments." To move up two levels, click on
"Business and Economy."
