Occupant protection: integral seats and
sensor-controlled roll-over bar

The sensor-controlled roll-over bar of the SL convertible is a highly refined innovative safety feature. It moves into position in a fraction of a second in an emergency, providing dependable occupant protection in conjunction with the robust frame of the front windscreen. As well as full-size airbags for driver and front seat passenger, the safety equipment of the SL also includes integral seats with a fully incorporated belt system and crash-tested seat structure.
Acceleration skid control (ASR), fitted as standard in the eight and twelve-cylinder models, ensures optimum active safety. The system improves handling stability throughout the speed range by automatically reducing engine torque and acting on the brakes at the driven wheels. ASR also improves traction when setting off.
The six-cylinder models are equipped as standard with the electronic traction support system ETS, which primarily improves traction when setting off, as well as on slippery road surfaces, and also warns the driver when the wheels begin to spin at higher speeds.
