Macintosh
Apple and Power Computing are the two giants of the Mac. And the Mac have many places becomed the standard in DTP. With PowerPC technology, it also have a bright future. But the PowerMac is a expensive computer.
The advantages of the MAC
- It's based on PowerPC technology
- Good for web-editing.
- It has SCSI standard
- It have becomed the standard within DTP.
- Good support.
The disadvantages of the MAC
- The PowerPC based Macintosh is too expensive for normal people.
- Poor multitasking.
- Poor OS.
- Hard to upgrade
PC
The most used computer-platform in the world, but this will maybe end sooner than you can imagine. With multi-billion dollar companies like Intel, MicroSoft, SUN, Cyrix, AMD, IBM etc...... the PC have many people involved, and have budgets that can afford billions of dollars on marketing. Leaving the other platforms completely in the shadow. And the extreme marketing have made the PC what it is today. Too bad it's such a rotten computer !
The advantages of the PC (Wintel)
- It's the world's most used computer-platform.
- The high sales leads to low prices.
- Good support (and you are gonna need it :) )
- Many game-developers
The disadvantages of the a PC (Wintel)
- Poor multitasking
- Use the slow and old-fashioned IDE as a standard
- Many different hardware developers, give troubles for the mainboard support. And demand more of the programmers.
- It have Conventional Memory !
- Constant need for upgrading !
- Programming is difficult compared to most platforms.
- The standard OS (Windows) , is just awful compared to other OS that exists.
- MicroSoft, making the standards.
Silicon Graphics
The Rolls Royce of the computer platforms. You have seen it's power in movies like Toy Story. It is used as servers, and 3D rendering beasts. And it have a great design. Unfortunately it's nearly as expensive as a Rolls Royce too. So the SGI is mostly for companies, and stinking rich people :)

- Speeeeeeeeed !!!
- It use UNIX as a standard OS
- High quality software
- Great with 3D and graphics.
The disadvantages of the SGI
- Lack of Shareware
The high price have made the SGI a computer for companies only. And since companies usually don't make any shareware, you have to buy every program you need.- It's really, really expensive ! (I would buy a car instead)
- And the software is also very expensive.
- Few hardware developers.
