"It's addicting...fun!
VR has finally arrived in the home,"
Brett Leonard, Director, The Lawnmower Man.
And just minutes from now you can experience the thrill of VR Slingshot, the game by which others will attempt to measure up. But first, here's more about this amazing new software feat..."The first virtual reality home unit"
Computer Graphics World.
VR Slingshot uses Newtonian physics to accurately simulate all motion. When a craft is hit, it spins correctly based on the force, direction, and location of the shot. Airflow is simulated using Computational Fluid Dynamics Grid techniques.
In Energy Duel, opponents struggle to deplete each other's energy reserves. The action takes place within a confined playing space. Restoring your energy requires carrier-type landings on suspended energy stations. If you still have energy reserves after your opponent's are depleted, you win the contest. Besides head-to-head play with live opponents, you can also hone your skills against the computer at varying levels of proficiency and create your own fun within this virtual world.
Disc Eliminator is Energy Duel with friendly-looking discs you can send out to track your opponent. When they lock on, however, they are lethal heat-seeking missiles. It gives everyone three things to worry about: gravity, the opponent, and the deadly tracking discs.
In Cyberball, you fly your craft to shoot a giant ball through your opponent's goal. Of course, your opponent is allowed to do just about anything to take the ball away from you and shoot it through your goal.
Here's a sound sample of a goal being scored in Cyberball:
(The internal sound player in Mosaic for Windows leaves much to be desired. For best sound quality, download this sample to disk and play it using a sound utility, like WHAM for the .au file, or Media Player or Sound Recorder for the .wav file. Make sure Load To Disk under the Options menu is checked before clicking above, then uncheck it after the file is received.)To truly appreciate the real-time 3D sound effects, such as Doppler effects, sound intensity effects, and spatial sound positioning, VR Slingshot must be experienced in real-time.
Since VR Slingshot accurately simulates three dimensional audio and video, optional hardware such as 3D Stereoscopic Glasses and a good sound system dramatically enhances game play. Through Digital Expression's "Digital Composite Mixing Technology" VR Slingshot can produce up to eight simultaneous 3D sound effects at once!
VR Slingshot can be played solo with a virtually simulated opponent, or with a real-life counterpart. For head-to-head play at up to 70 frames per second, a modem or direct serial connection at 1200bps or higher is required.
VR Slingshot is so fluid even during modem play that the computer no longer seems to matter...a cybersport...what virtual reality is all about -- taking the medium out of the message...a positively liberating experience. I've never felt so free in a game."Peter Olafson, Amiga World
