MOOs (and MUDs) are text-based fantasies. Users create places and characters by describing them in text. The written "objects" (rooms, people, things) are active; they respond to instructions from users. Many users can simultaneously interact in one consenually created space - the MOO.

HotWired has created one room in each of two leading MOOs: LambdaMOO and BayMOO. HotWired members can enter these two MOO places via HotWired. Once in the MOO, they can roam freely among many rooms and visit the special HotWired room, Cafe Wired.

LambdaMOO is run as an experiment at Xerox PARC, Xerox's research campus in Palo Alto, California. BayMOO is a public MOO that re-creates a virtual San Francisco Bay area experience.

The MOO happens inside a "telnet window" that pops up while you are in HotWired. This window provides a constant stream of continually changing data. Most of HotWired consists of fixed "pages" of data, updated occasionally.

Before you enter a MOO from here, keep in mind that you'll need to enter the following information after you see the welcome screen:

LambdaMOO
At the first prompt, type: connect guest
To enter Cafe Wired on LambdaMOO, type: @go #75506

BayMOO

You'll then be asked to describe yourself.
To enter Cafe Wired on BayMOO, type: @go cafe wired
