Climate

Air Conditioning
Research has shown that a comfortable driver is a safer driver. That's one of the reasons we pay such close attention to the air conditioning, heating, and ventilation systems inside all our models. Volvo air conditioning systems also act as dehumidifiers that dry as well as cool the air, condensing excess water and draining it away. A filter is incorporated into the system to trap and remove airborne particles, including pollen and other pollutants. On some of our cars, the air conditioning systems operate with manual control. other models have our Electronic Climate Control system.

Electronic Climate Control
The Electronic Climate Control (ECC) system installed in the 960 and 850 models is a model of comfort, efficiency and convenience. Once the optimum temperature setting has been selected from within a range of 65 degrees to 86 degrees Fahrenheit, air conditioner and heater automatically work together to maintain that setting. Electronic sensors measure both inside and outside air temperature. A third sensor mounted by the coolant hose prevents the fan from turning until the engine warms up, so cold air doesn't flood into the car on a winter day. There's a temperature sensor located on the dash; when sunlight strikes the light sensor, the temperature automatically lowers a few degrees to compensate. In the 850 series, both the manual heat/AC control and the ECC systems have individual temperature controls for driver and front passenger.

Outlets
Multiple outlets direct heated, cooled, or fresh ventilating air through the passenger compartment with speed and efficiency. We design our climate systems with fourteen outlets: directional outlets across the dashboard that are adjusted individually, defroster vents for the windshield and front side windows, and floor vents for the rear seat passengers. The 850 adds a special fresh-air vent for the driver that is independent of all other vents.

Recirculation
A recirculation feature allows continuous air recirculation within the passenger compartment. Each time air passes through the air conditioning system it is cleaned, cooled, and dehumidified for comfort. It is also freshened with a certain amount of new air from outside the vehicle.

Stale Air Exhaust
When your Volvo is in motion or the fan is on, special one-way ventilation flaps help to exhaust stale air from the passenger compartment.

Ventilation
The fresh-air ventilation inlets, adjustable ventilation outlets, floor-direct front vents, and rear floor outlets of every Volvo model are all designed and positioned to keep air circulating efficiently inside the car.
