Company Profile
November 24, 1995
GolfWeb is the Internet’s premier golf Web site. Winner of the 1995 GNN (Global Network Navigator) Best of the Net award for Best Professional Sports Site, GolfWeb is committed to providing "Everything Golf on the World Wide Web!" GolfWeb offers something for everyone with an interest in golf, from the latest professional tournament scores, to extensive course information, to an online pro shop.
GolfWeb was first envisioned in June 1994 by Ed Pattermann, now president and CEO of GolfWeb. His goal was to create a Web site where golf lovers could come for golf information and services in every category and to communicate with other golfers. The other principals in the Cupertino, CA based company are: Cynthia Typaldos, chief operating officer and vice president of business development; Bob Vieraitis, vice president of marketing and sales; and Kevin Klier, director of golf company sales.
GolfWeb received initial seed funding in December 1994 and was launched in January 1995. Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), a top-tier venture capital firm, and Stanford University provided first round funding. Geoff Yang, the IVP partner responsible for the investment in GolfWeb, has had great success with other start-ups including SynOptics, Centillion, and Wellfleet Communications (purchased by Synoptics earlier this year).
GolfWeb has experienced tremendous success since it first debuted on the Internet. The Web site averages 180,000 accesses per weekday by readers in more than 65 countries. This number more than triples during major tournaments, when GolfWeb reports live from the event with up to the minute scores, photos and other tournament information.
GolfWeb is organized into several different sections for quick and easy access to information. The major sections are:
With a business model based on advertising, services and product revenue, GolfWeb is free to the reader. GolfWeb has already attracted advertisers such as 3Com, Alien Sport, Callaway Golf, Cleveland Golf, Karsten Manufacturing (makers of Ping), Motorola, NEC, Odyssey Golf, and Tommy Armour Golf. Other revenue sources will include the Premier Club and Services, the GolfWeb Pro Shop, and classifieds and interactive services.
GolfWeb has received recognition from national and international business, computer and golf media. Within the Internet community, numerous Internet browser programs, including the retail version of Netscape and Prodigy’s browser, contain GolfWeb as the standard golf bookmark. GolfWeb is prominently featured in Yahoo and is catalogued by all of the major internet directories and search engines. This visibility, along with GolfWeb’s own marketing program, has spurred 20% per month growth in readership.
GolfWeb is a member of the National Golf Foundation and of CommerceNet, a worldwide consortium of businesses with a charter to develop, maintain and endorse an Internet-based infrastructure for electronic commerce.
GolfWeb can be accessed through all major online service providers including America Online, Compuserve, MSN and Prodigy, any Internet service provider such as Netcom, PSI or UUnet and, in Japan, via PC-VAN and Nifty-serve.
