Resources Available Over The Internet
2.01 GOPHER Servers:
A menu-based system for exploring Internet resources. This is a good one
begin with, as Gopher accesses other servers for you, so you can first
get a feel for whats out there through Gopher, then use TELNET or FTP to
retrieve specific materials within your subject area.
2.02 E-MAIL:
Lets you send and retrieve messages with other individuals. You can
also have information sent to you about Listservs or other services, by
sending a message (to the address) requesting information.
2.03 LIBRARY CATALOGS:
Library catalogs from all around the world are accessible through the
Internet. The easiest way to locate and search these is through the
Gopher system.
2.04 NETWORK NEWS:
Discussion Groups or Bulletin Boards allow you to read and post
electronic discussions of technical and non-technical issues which have
been sent to public news-groups. Discussions are organized under
subject categories. You can join their mailing lists or simply browse
their contents.
2.05 CAMPUS WIDE INFORMATION Systems and
Directory Service:
Use this to see whats happening on other campuses and to find out what
information is accessible through other colleges and universities. You
can also search for resource and information services about women
through this service.
2.06 FREENETS:
These are grassroots networking services established for urban
communities. Contain bulletin boards, electronic discussion groups and
other information services.
2.07 WAIS Servers:
Wide-Area Information Servers, a tool for looking up information in
databases or libraries across the Internet. [See Internet Search-Tools

2.08 TELNET:
Enables you to logon to other (remote) computers on the Internet.

2.09 FTP Servers:
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) enables you to copy a file from a remote
computer and send it to your system (your computer). Basically, FTP
