June 1, 1995
America Online announces its acquisition of The WebCrawler and GNN as part of its strategy to develop a strong presence on the World-Wide Web. The WebCrawler will be operated by America Online as a public service to the Internet, and will operate from a new Internet location, http://webcrawler.com/. March 29, 1995
The WebCrawler service, growing exponentially, swamps the new dedicated server. New servers are added to accommodate the growth.

December 12, 1994
Starwave becomes the WebCrawler's second sponsor, expanding the WebCrawler's local sponsorship. Starwave offers three popular Internet services: ESPNET SportsZone, Outside Magazine Online, and Mr. Showbiz!

December 5, 1994
The WebCrawler traffic overwhelms its original 486 server; service is moved to a dedicated Pentium running NEXTSTEP.

December 1, 1994
Dealernet becomes the WebCrawler's charter sponsor by donating a new server to the effort. A Seattle-based company, Dealernet's Virtual Showroom is is the place to check out cars on the Internet.

November 14, 1994
The WebCrawler answers its 1-millionth query. The query was "NUCLEAR WEAPONS DESIGN AND RESEARCH".

April 20, 1994
The WebCrawler goes public on the Internet for the first time. The database contained entries from just over 6000 different servers.

January 27, 1994
Brian Pinkerton starts the development of the WebCrawler at the University of Washington.
