The Pergamon Altar
Here are some images of the Great Frieze of the Pergamon Altar, taken
in the Pergamon Museum (Berlin) with a hand-held camera without
artificial light. Consequently, many of the following images are fuzzy. However,
given the supreme importance of this Altar for the history of Roman art (as well
as in its own right, of course), all are given. The negatives were first written
to a laserdisk, with vertical images "laid down" on their sides so as to capture the
largest area possible. They appear here just as they came off the laserdisk. The
worst will be weeded out when I have a moment...
You might wish to investigate other collections of Pergamon material on this
server, for example via database access,
or by looking at my book on The Greek &
Roman Cities of Western Turkey, which can also be
searched.
This collection of images will - when time permits - form the basis for a tutorial
presentation of the Altar (with all the most dodgy frames weeded out), similar in type to that devoted to
The "Palace" of Diocletian at Split.
So please bear with me whilst I amass sufficient funds to develop my activities,
and to turn these random images into a proper presentation!
