Help On NCSA Mosaic Documents Menu
Help On NCSA Mosaic Documents Menu
For your convenience, the Documents menu of NCSA Mosaic's menubar points to an assortment
of useful information sources. (See the usual disclaimer about the
availability and reliability of these sources; suffice it to say that
they are not part of NCSA Mosaic and may work or not work independent of
NCSA Mosaic's level of quality.)
The Documents menu looks like this (as of version 1.1):
Information sources currently available via the Documents menu:
- Web Overview
- The closest thing there is to a toplevel view of the
World Wide Web information space.
- Web Project
- An overview of the CERN-based World Wide Web project.
- Other Web Documents
- This submenu includes the following entries:
- Data Sources By Service
- A partial list of information available via the World Wide Web,
broken down by service (network protocol).
- Information By Subject
- A partial index of information available via the
World Wide Web, broken down by subject.
- Web News
- The latest version of the World Wide Web news, from CERN.
- Web Servers Directory
- A partial list of existing World Wide Web servers.
- InterNIC Info Source
- An excellent collection of Internet-related information
made available by the
new "NIC of NICs", the InterNIC.
- NCSA Mosaic Home Page
- The home page you normally should see when you start NCSA Mosaic.
- NCSA Mosaic Demo Page
- A walk-through demonstration of many of NCSA Mosaic's capabilities
and the range of information available on the Internet.
- NCSA Home Page
- The home page you would see (well, maybe) if you lived at NCSA
in lovely Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.
- Other Home Pages
- This submenu includes several other home pages of known
interesting World Wide Web sites.
- WAIS Interface
- An interface into WAIS space, including details on the NCSA WWW/WAIS
gateway and various directories of servers.
- Gopher Interface
- An interface into Gopherspace, via an overview of Gopherspace
and pointers to some particularly interesting Gopher servers
(including those of the NSF Metacenter for Computational
Science, UMN, and UIUC).
- FTP Interface
- An interface into the world of anonymous FTP, via a hypertext
listing of interesting anonymous FTP sites.
- Usenet Interface
- An interface into Usenet, the distributed NNTP-based discussion
system. Note that the availability of any particular
newsgroup is entirely dependent on your local news server;
note also that you should set your
NNTPSERVER
environment variable to the name of your favorite news server
before invoking NCSA Mosaic.
- Finger Interface
- An interface into finger, including full faces support.
- HyTelnet Interface
- Pointer to a catalog of university libraries accessible via telnet.
- TeXinfo Interface
- Pointer to an archive of GNU TeXinfo documentation.
- Other Interfaces
- This submenu contains a variety of interfaces to various other
Internet-based information services.
- Other Documents
- This submenu contains pointers to various other information sources
that may be particularly interesting to first-time users of
Mosaic or the Internet.
(Note: Many items in the Documents menu were selected simply because
they are particularly interesting examples of how real domain-specific
information in technical and nontechnical fields alike is moving onto
the Internet. Many other such resources and servers exist on the
network; seek, and ye shall find.)
