Computers are both my hobby and my livelihood. I work with crappy software for a living but am drawn towards the fringes of computing, where cool computers lurk and never die. When I'm not working with or programming my Amiga, I brew my own beer (or enjoy drinking it), watch my favorite TV show (Babylon 5), ride my bike, play guitar, race rats, fill the attic with cash, or play with my wife Kristy and with our cats, Chiave and Snowy. :-) I used to work at the University of Maryland, College Park. But not anymore. My legacy there is the web site for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (now in decay... <sigh>), a powerful, but under-utilized Online Application Processor, an alternate PC-based application program, as well as over 150,000 lines of custom code to maintain, integrate, and streamline a large number of operations. I'm now working for one of the "big six" accounting and consulting firms in Washington, D.C. where my long hair and permanently casual dress has made more than one "suit" uncomfortable. They make me sad. But I'm working at a client site now and involved with far cooler stuff than ever before, namely a major internet project in Java! And if you've read this far and you've been asking yourself all this time "Why Walrus?" then you should know that the story behind the handle is far less exciting than you might think. It involves an Alan Parsons song. It involves a small alabaster walrus that served as a mascot on a trip in 1987. It involves strange tales of strange lands and an even stranger dance. Let that be all the clarity you gain. Be still now, be calm. |
