Guidelines for Configuring Games with the Aztech Sound Cards.

16ACARD or 16BACARD

The following document describes how to configure MS-DOS based games with the 16ACARD and 16BACARD sound cards in Windows 95. This document assumes that you have already loaded the real mode drivers for the sound card and the card functions properly in Windows 95. The drivers for these cards can be found on the driver diskette that was shipped with the sound card. The part number of the disk is 16ACARDDSKX and the most recent version of the driver is 1.11.

Finding Your Sound Card Settings

Many games require that you know the hardware settings of your sound card in order to install the game. To find the settings of your 16ACARD perform the following procedure:

1. Click Start, then Run.
2. Type: sysedit, and click OK
3. The System Configuration Editor will open up. We want to look in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Do not make any changes to this file.
4. There will be a SET BLASTER=...... line. This line stores some of the settings for your card.
   • A= Base I/O port address of the card (soundblaster).
   • I= Interrupt Request Level (IRQ) of the card.
   • D= Low (8-bit)DMA channel of the card.
   • T= Card type - not used by game install programs.
5. There will be a SET GALAXY=...... line. This line stores the rest of the settings for the card.
   • A= Base I/O port address of the card (soundblaster).
   • I= Interrupt Request Level (IRQ) of the card.
   • D= DMA channel of the card.
   • K= CODEC IRQ - probably not used by any game install programs.
   • P= Midi Port address.
   • T= High (16-bit) DMA channel .
6. Close the System Configuration Editor.

Installing the Program

Once you have found the settings of the card it is time to run the installation program for your game. This can be done from the Add New Programs wizard located in the Control Panel, if the installation program is in the root directory of the diskette or CD-ROM from which you installed. Once you have located the install program, click on the Finish button to start the installation program.

During the course of the installation program you may be asked questions about the hardware in your system. You should have all the settings you need from the procedure above. If you are asked what type of sound card you have and Aztech is not a choice, try either Adlib or SoundBlaster Compatibles.

Running the Program

After you have finished installing the program, run the program:

1. Right Click on the My Computer icon. Then choose Explore.
2. Double click on the drive letter to which the application was installed.
3. Then double click on the directory to which it was installed.
4. Find the executable file (to do so, click View, then Details) and look for the word application on the right side.
5. Double click the icon.

   If the program runs correctly after completing step (5), do not continue with the following steps. Instead, go to the end of this document where icons and shortcuts are discussed.

   If the program is not running correctly, you may need to modify the MS-DOS Mode configuration to make the game work. Follow the steps below:

6. Right Click on the My Computer icon. Then choose Explore.
7. Double click on the drive letter to which the application was installed and then double click on the directory.
8. Find the executable, (click view, then details) and look for the word application on the right side of the screen, right click then choose Properties.
9. Choose the Program tab and then click on the Advanced button.
10. Click on MS-DOS mode and then Specify a new MS-DOS configuration and add the following lines:

    CONFIG.SYS

    dos=high,umb
    device=c:\windows\himem.sys
    Note: The next line is needed if your game requires EMS
    device=c:\windows\emm386.exe ram 2048
    Note: The next line is used for games that do not need EMS
    device=c:\windows\emm386.exe noems
    Note: The line below can be copied from your config.dos file. The line will depend on the CD-ROM drive being used - our example shows an NEC dual speed
    device=c:\cdrom\nec_ide.sys /d:mscd001 /v
    Note: The line listed below must be here if Plug-n-Play cards are installed, otherwise it is not needed.
    devicehigh=c:\plugplay\drivers\dos\dwcfgmg.sys

11. Click on the OK button. On the Properties screen, click on OK.
12. An icon will be created, double click the icon to start the game.

Icons & Shortcuts

The MS-DOS icon created above, can be moved to the desktop or a folder, for your convenience. Simply drag and drop the icon to itís new location with the mouse. You can make a copy of the icon by holding down the Control key as you drag the icon to a different location. You can also drag the icon from the desktop to the Start button and drop it. A shortcut will be created for you on the Start Menu.
