Configuring IDE CD-ROMS For MS-DOS Mode Applications In Windows 95

When the system switches over to MS-DOS Mode the protected mode drivers are unloaded and replaced with real-mode components. Therefore, in order for your CD-ROM to be recognized in MS-DOS mode, the drivers for it must be loaded in the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files associated with the application. To make changes to these files, follow the procedure listed below:

  1. Right-click on the My Computer icon and then choose Explore.

  2. Double-click on the drive letter the application was installed to and then double-click on the directory it was installed in.

  3. Find the executable, (click view, then details) and look for the word application on the right side of the screen.

  4. Right-click the executable, and then choose Properties.

  5. Choose the Program tab and then click on the Advanced button.

  6. Click on MS-DOS mode and then Specify a New MS-DOS Configuration.

The chart below lists the IDE CD-ROM drives that Gateway 2000 has sold, and the Device line that is needed in the CONFIG.SYS file for each drive.

Epson 2x Device=C:\CDD\WCD.SYS /WD_CD-ROM
Epson 4x Device=C:\CDD\WCD.SYS /WD_CD-ROM
Hitachi 4x Device=C:\DEV\HIT-IDE.SYS /D:MSCD005
Mitsumi 4x Device=C:\MTM\MTMCDAI.SYS /D:MSCD001
Nec 2x Device=C:\NEC_IDE.SYS /D:MSCD001 * see note
Sanyo 4x Device=C:\TSY\TSYCDROM.SYS /D:TSYCD1 /P:SM
Sanyo 3-disk Device=C:\TORISAN\TORISAN.SYS /D:TSYCD3 /P:SM
Sony 2x Device=C:\DEV\ATATPI.SYS /D:SONY_000
Wearnes 6x Device=C:\CDD\WCD.SYS /D:WP_CDROM

You will now need to add the following line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:xxxxxxx /V

Note: The xxxxxxxx that follows the /D: must exactly match the string that followed the /D: in the CONFIG.SYS file. If these are not identical, the driver will not load and you will not have CD-ROM support.

When you click OK, after you have modified the CONFIG.SYS and the AUTOEXEC.BAT, a new icon will be created for the program. This icon can be moved to the desktop for your convenience. Simply drag the icon to the desktop and drop.

Note: The settings in the CONFIG.SYS file for the NEC 2x CD-ROM will vary according to the version of the driver you have. See your manual or the README.TXT file if you have downloaded newer drivers for these settings.
