This document contains the installation instructions for the Diamond Viper PCI video card. Follow these procedures if you need to reinstall these drivers. This installation procedure assumes that the 3.5 inch diskette drive is your A: drive. How to Install Diamond Viper PCI Video Drivers
Installation procedure:
- Insert the Viper PCI Installation diskette into the A: drive. At the A:\> prompt, type:
to begin the installation.

- The initial screen that appears is titled Viper PCI GO.EXE. On the right hand side of the screen is a red box that contains the maximum resolutions and colors that the video supports. On the right hand side of the screen the Windows menu is highlighted and MS WINDOWS 3.1 is highlighted underneath this. Press Enter to continue with the installation.
- The installation asks for a desired location for the drivers. The directory name that appears is C:\VIPER. Press Enter to accept this default and continue.
- The next screen asks for the source drive of the diskette. The A: drive will be highlighted as the default answer. (If you are using a different diskette drive, make the modification here.) Press Enter to continue.
- A window titled Microsoft Windows 3.1 sub-directory appears. Highlighted in the box is C:\WINDOWS which is the default directory. (If your Windows program is at a different location, make the modification here.) Press the Enter key to accept the directory and continue.
- A box appears that says Completed. Files have been transferred completely. Press any key to continue. Press Enter to continue with the installation. You will be returned to the screen that appeared when the installation was started.
- Using the right arrow key, highlight Utilities and press Enter. Select VPRMODE.EXE from the drop down menu. Press Enter and the next screen will prompt you to load the drivers in the C:\VIPER directory. Press Enter for this default.
- The installation asks for the source path for the drivers which will default to A:\> again. (If you are using a different diskette drive, make the modification here.) Press Enter to continue.
- The next screen will tell you that The VPRMODE.EXE has been successfully installed. Press any key to continue. Press Enter to complete the installation.
- Press the ESC key to exit the installation program and return to DOS.
Monitor Selection
In order for the video card and monitor to work correctly together, the monitor needs to be selected in the driver software.
- At the C:\> prompt type:
and press Enter. At the C:\VIPER directory, type:
cd\viper
and press Enter to go to the Monitor Selection utility.

- The initial screen that appears is titled Viper PCI VPRMODE. On the right hand side of the screen there is a red text box that contains the monitor information. There will be three main drop down menus on the left hand side of the screen. Using the right arrow key, highlight Monitor to bring down the monitor selection menu. Once this is highlighted, press the Enter key to bring down the current list of monitors. Select your specific monitor from the list and press Enter to continue.
- If your monitor doesn't appear on the list, select Custom from the monitor list and press Enter. Select the applicable resolution that you wish to run and select the number of colors that you want. Press Enter for each selection and choose the applicable refresh rate for your monitor. Document #1910, contains the most common refresh rates for most of the monitors that Gateway has sold and is currently selling.
- Once you are finished selecting your monitor, press the Esc key on the keyboard to exit to the Main screen. Press Enter to complete the configuration and exit the monitor selection menu. Once you return to the C:\VIPER> prompt, reboot your system so the changes to take effect.
Changing Resolutions and Colors within Windows:
The video driver installation program installs an icon within Windows which allows you to modify the screen resolution and number of colors from within Windows at any time.
- From the Program Manager, double click on the Main group.
- In the Main group, double click on the Control Panel.
- Within the Control Panel there will be an Icon called Viper PCI. This icon will allow you to select the screen resolution and number of colors that you wish to run.
- Once you have made your selection, Windows will need to be restarted. Click on the Restart Windows or OK button to do this.
