The Daphne Jackson Trust: Returners to Science and
Engineering
- Purpose
- Daphne Jackson Fellowships enable high-level scientist and engineers
to return to their professions after a career break.
- Rationale
- It is particularly hard to re-enter science or engineering.
In such rapidly moving fields, constant attention is needed to keep up
with the latest development. Many people, mostly women, vanish forever
from their professions due to breaks to raise children, care for
the elderly, or simply because of a partner's relocation. The Daphne
Jackson Fellowship scheme demonstrates that this
appalling waste need not happen.
- Programme
- A Fellowship lasts for two years, and is held on
on a flexible, part-time basis at a convenient
university. There a Fellow
retrains in the context of a guided
research project,
possibly entering a new field, and certainly making
key contacts in the academic world and among potential
employers in industry. This effective programme results in
greatly increased self-confidence and
a high rate of success in re-entry into advanced
science and engineering.
- Special Fellowships
- Some (but not all) Daphne Jackson Fellowships are linked
to specific universities. These include Fellowships at
Lucy Cavendish College Cambridge,
Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine,
University College London, Loughborough University and the
Universities of Bath, Bristol, Keele
and Surrey.
A number of other universities
are in the process of
setting up such fellowships.
