Here is a directory containing all published issues of The Bottom Line, an electronic magazine for bassists. It has all kinds of funny and factual articles about music and equipment. There's also another TBL WWW site that has some stuff not included here.
You can search the archived issues with a WAIS search. It also does Boolean searches. It seems to favour shorter TBL issues. I formerly used the NCSA WAIS-WWW gateway; now the gateway resides here. This should make WAIS searches more reliable.
I have added a bit of intelligence to the perl script that receives all new issues. The issues are transmogrified into a simple hypertext form, where the table of contents in the beginning actually contains links to the corresponding articles. If you have ideas about added functionality, please mail me.
The official FTP archive is at ftp.uwp.edu, directory /pub/music/lists/bass, which I recommend for bulk transfers, at least for US denizens.
We also sport a few bass-related pictures. Here's a flashy picture of Carol Kaye, the grandmother of all electric bassists. But she doesn't look like a grandmother in this picture... We also have a snapshot of a true precursor in electric bass, David Little, clinging to his 5-stringer. And here's young Jack Casady at his Guild Starfire during the Jefferson Airplane days. Dave Holland looks rather poised here. The picture above is by the Finnish artist Markus Heikkerö.
I keep a modest netnews archive of bass-related
things. It contains some useful articles from
rec.music.makers.bass
and the FAQ. Also, take a look at
the Bass Player section of Electronic Newsstand.
Finally, here are a couple of links to other TBL'ers' HTML pages. (Others, get active!)
