Lab/DOE veterans move to UC

Carl D. Henning and Carl H. Poppe -- both from the Livermore lab and recently on special assignments at DOE headquarters -- have joined the University of California in key positions related to lab oversight.

Carl D. Henning Carl H. Poppe

Henning is the new head of the Laboratory Administration Office, which works with the labs and the DOE in implementing UC's performance-based management contracts for the Berkeley, Livermore, and Los Alamos labs. He succeeds Robert W. Kuckuck, who returned to Livermore as deputy director for operations after more than two years in the UC position.

A mechanical engineer and former senior manager at Livermore, Henning for nearly two years was deputy director for the Office of the National Ignition Facility.

Poppe, a nuclear physicist and former division leader at Livermore, has the newly created UC post of associate vice provost for research and laboratory programs. He will help oversee UC's programmatic and academic relationship with the labs. A major focus will be to guide and promote collaborative research activities among the labs, the nine UC campuses, the larger scientific community, and private industry. Poppe spent two years at DOE as a technical adviser in the Office of Arms Control and Nonproliferation.
