HAMPSHIRE COLLEGE
To Know Is Not Enough
Hampshire College was created in 1965 as an alternative to traditional liberal arts education to offer talented students the freedom to shape their own course of learning, working closely with faculty mentors. In 1970 Hampshire's first class of students and faculty set out on a journey of educational inquiry and discovery that over the years has led to some of the most influential ideas in higher education. Hampshire is set on 800 acres of meadows, woods, orchards and a working farm in Amherst, Massachusetts, a vibrant college town that is also home to the University of Massachusetts and Amherst College, and is within several miles of Smith and Mount Holyoke Colleges. The colleges are partners in the Five College Consortium, an educational cooperative with the resources of a major research university that allows students from each member school to take courses and enter programs at any of the five campuses.
