Mpeg Player for X

The Controls

Rewind to the beginning of the movie. If you are in loop mode the movie will rewind and continue playing. Otherwise, you must click on play after pressing rewind to start the movie rolling again.

Stop the movie. You can start it again by pressing play.

Step forward one frame at a time.

Play the movie at full speed.

Loop puts you in loop mode. The movie will begin playing at full speed. The difference is, upon reaching the end of the movie you loop back to the beginning and the movie continues playing.

How can I get a copy?

Attention: Windows and Macintosh users
Mpeg Player for X will not work under your OS. You need to pick up one of these other programs instead. Since I did not write these other viewers I will not answer any questions I receive about them:

For anyone with a machine running X, just click on the appropriate link to download a precompiled tarred binary! Warning: Only the Sun4 and SGI version have been tested.

Alternatively, you can ftp it from ftp.geom.umn.edu:

Is there a viewer for X11 that plays other kinds of animations besides mpeg?

Yes! Check out XAnim, another animation program for X11 that supports, among other things, Quicktime and AVI animations including sound! XAnim will also likely support mpeg animations in the near future, hopefully making the Mpeg Player obsolete. Enjoy!

Any Questions?

Send email to the author: daeron@geom.umn.edu. Also, make sure you check out the rest of the software available here at the Geometry Center.

Important: This version of Mpeg Player relies heavily on the code from the original MPEG Video Software Decoder. It is in fact, merely an extension to the original decoder, that provides a more friendly user interface.

Credits

My work on the Mpeg Player motif user interface and several other software projects has been supported by The Geometry Center at the University of Minnesota.

Many thanks to those mentioned above who were so eager to port this version to other architectures!

The original MPEG Video Software Decoder (mpeg player) was written by Lawrence A. Rowe, Ketan Patel, and Brian Smith at the Computer Science Division-EECS, University of California at Berkeley.

There are several mailing lists for the original version of mpeg player:

mpeg-list-dist@CS.Berkeley.EDU
General information on the decoder for everyone interested should be sent to this list. This should become active after 11/20/92

mpeg-list-request@CS.Berkeley.EDU
Requests to join or leave the list should be sent to this address. The subject line should contain the single word ADD or DELETE.
