Founded in 1993, InterWorking Labs invited all the industry
networking manufacturers to a Test Summit to debug their
products for interoperability, compatibility, and conformance to
the Simple Network Management Protocol, a specification produced
by the Internet Engineering Task Force. Since this beginning,
the quality and reliablity of SNMP products dramatically
improved, as more and more manufacturers recognized the value
and benefits of testing.
Today, InterWorking Labs tests several networking protocols and
implementations, including SNMP, RMON, Windows
TCP/IP, and various MIBs. InterWorking Labs sells Test Suite
products, performs custom testing of networking products, and
organizes group interoperability tests.

Through multi-vendor "Test Summits" and private testing, InterWorking Labs tests networking products against a series of test suites as well as testing actual interoperability with other networking products.
"Test Summits" are multi-vendor events. All the participating vendors send engineers and their hardware and software. Everyone attaches to a running network at the test site. Each vendor undergoes testing from a test suite, and inter-vendor tests are arranged and performed. To encourage constructive dialog between vendors, the entire activity is performed under the protection of a non-disclosure agreement. In addition, because interoperability problems are often due to ambiguities in the specifications, the summit is also attended by independent experts who are able to offer their advice.
The first SNMP Test Summit was held in January 1994 in San Jose. Present were a number of major SNMP vendors. Using a test suite designed by Marshall Rose and other prominent members of the SNMP community, the participants subjected their SNMP version 1 and SNMP version 2 agents and managers to a wide variety of protocol tests. In addition, vendors were able to work among themselves to ensure mutual interoperability.
The second SNMP and RMON Test Summit was held in June 1994 in San Jose, California. This summit focused on MIB-II and RMON. Independent experts who attended included Marshall Rose, Steve Waldbusser, and Karl Auerbach. The vendors underwent testing from a test suite and stress testing using synthetic and actual traffic loads simulating both normal and pathological networks. Vendors worked with one another to verify mutual interoperability and to resolve differences of interpretation of the specifications.

An excellent source of general information about network management is Network Management archive. This site has information on books, mail lists, terms, frequently asked questions, and many other useful topics.
The SNMPv2 specification is undergoing revision. Please see Carnegie Mellon University's SNMPv2 Working Group Problem Reports summary. This is an excellent, updated status of the various technical issues under discussion.
A real challenge for companies designing their Internet strategies is to understand the demographics of those using the Internet. The GVU/HERMES 3rd WWW User Survey, one of the more comprehensive, ongoing, online surveys is now on. Summary results and data will be freely available to the entire WWW community! We encourage you to take the survey, and help increase knowledge and understanding of all those doing business on the Internet.
