About Entomology
Entomology is the science that deals with the study of insects and their relatives.
Entomologists study various aspects of the biology of these animals, including their
ecology, behavior, genetics, physiology, biochemistry, taxonomy, systematics, and
population dynamics. In addition, entomologists use the knowledge derived from these
studies to develop programs for managing populations of annoying or damaging species.
Insects constitute the single largest group of animals. There are about one million
named species, and probably many more await discovery. Of the named species, only a
minute fraction have been studied in any detail. A great challenge awaits future
entomologists to conceive, test, and implement programs to effectively manage pest
species with the least possible environmental disruption. Exciting challenges in
the science of entomology assure fine employment opportunities and rewarding careers
for students.
