Introduction
Langley's Integrated Computing Environment (ICE), is an
effort to help LaRC computer users move between different computers,
potentially running a different operating system on different
hardware, with a minimum of trouble. If you do experience trouble,
please use our Online ICE
Problem & Suggestion Form.
Currently, the main focus of ICE is to provide a common set of software tools which can be
provided to users, regardless of workstation type. The testbed is a
network of 5 Sun SPARCStation LX machines running Solaris 2.3 and
X11R5. These machines are currently in daily use by members of the ICE group and by users supported by
them. Future plans include SunOS 4.x, SGI, IBM and HP platforms, as
well as PC compatible machines and Apple Macintosh systems. Please
see the ICE Accomplishments List
for more information on what we've done so far.
An Information Clearinghouse
One of the goals of ICE is to become an information clearinghouse for
the LaRC system administrators and users. To this end, we've set up
some useful archives for the LaRC community to use, as well as
pointers to information sources by other organizations. If you think
of others, please don't hesitate to suggest them!
The Langley Bookshelf of online
documentation contains several computing-related manuals and books,
including new user guides. We'd like to include information sources
for other disciplines as well. If you know of any, please be sure to
let us
know.
To help spread the word about computer security issues, we've
established an archive of computer
security related bulletins and advisories (keyword
searching is available as well).
Now that we've got your attention,
Mike Walker has
prepated a great page of information regarding maintenance of
Sun Microsystems machines
and software.
Sharon Paulson has provided a similar page for information regarding
maintenance of Silicon
Graphics (SGI) systems.
Additionally, Tad Guy
has made available the Contract Line Item Numbers (CLINs) provided by
Government Micro Resources (GMR) for FY95
Sun Maintenance and FY95 SGI
Maintenance.
We've identified several key technologies applicable to ICE and
ICE-like environments. The Advanced
Distributed Computing Technologies page contains pointers to more
information about these subjects.
