Winnipeg is the fifth largest city in Canada, with a population of about 600,000 people, and is the capital of the province of Manitoba. Within a few hours drive are lakes and wilderness areas ideal for fishing, camping, hiking and canoeing in the summer. Although the winters are cold, they are sunny and the air is dry. Winter outdoor sports include skiing (cross-country and moderate down-hill skiing), snowshoeing, and a variety of other sports. Indoor sports facilities on the University campus include a swimming pool, track and field stadium, skating rink, squash, handball, tennis courts and gymnasia.
