Welcome to Pacific Northwest Laboratory

PNL is a multi-program national laboratory operated for the United States Department of Energy by Battelle Memorial Institute. PNL is committed to the principles of total quality to sustain excellence in research and development and the conduct of all Laboratory operations, such as compliance with all applicable environmental, safety, and health requirements.

The mission of PNL is to conduct research and development to meet national needs in energy, environment, the economy, and national security. A major part of PNL's activities is specifically focused on resolving environmental issues, such as waste cleanup at Hanford and global climate change. In accomplishing its mission requirements, PNL rapidly applies scientific discoveries and engineering innovations. PNL forms partnerships with universities, industry, and other federal laboratories to assist in meeting PNL's programmatic responsibilities, to enhance the economic competitiveness of the nation, to diversify the economy of the region, and to provide for the education of future generations of scientists and engineers. Included within the scope of these partnerships is the development and operation of major scientific user facilities.

In addition to serving DOE in carrying out its missions, when appropriate, PNL also performs work for other federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
