How to find an access number

The list is organized alphabetically by State (for the United States) or Province (for Canada). Within a grouping, the cities are in alphabetical order by city name. The number follows the city name. You can use the page search function to quickly locate the city or area code of your choice. If your city is here, you're lucky; just choose to use that number, but what if my city isn't here?

What if my city isn't here?

If your city isn't listed here, look first for an access number geographically near your location. If you are near a state border; remember that looking across the border can be a good idea.

If you are near an area code boundary, don't forget to look in the neighboring area code. In some metropolitan areas, calls to another area code may be less expensive than calls to a farther location in your own area code.

Compare the access numbers on the list with the information available from your local and long distance telephone providers.

Remember that telephone tariffs are regulated and the regulations don't necessarily produce obvious results. Sometimes calling within an area code is much more expensive than calling long distance to another area code.

Once you have information about calling plans, compare them with the Dial NETCOM service plan. This service is rebilled at $0.08 per minute. You can choose it by clicking the Directory button under telephone settings, then choosing Dial NETCOM.

What if I am outside of the United States and Canada

At this time, NETCOM does not have access points outside of the contiguous lower 48 United States. NETCOM is working on expansion to selected Canadian cities. For NetCruiser users, this means that if you are trying to connect from Alaska, Hawaii, other Canadian cities, Mexico, Central America, or from another continent, you will need to call long distance to one of the NETCOM access points. If you are where you do not need to speak with an operator, you can probably connect successfully. The space in NetCruiser allotted for the telephone number allows for the entry of many digits. First, choose the access point to which you wish to connect. You then can enter the special connection numbers, credit card numbers, and any other numbers that you may need to use before the number for the access point. NetCruiser stores all the information that you enter in this area in the netcom.ini file, so that it remains available to you between connections.

If you are a NETCOM host (shell) user, and you can find access to the Internet using another service, you can use telnet to connect to your NETCOM account. Enter any of the NETCOM hosts as part of your telnet command, e.g. telnet netcom19.netcom.com. You can then use the systems in much the same way as if you connected with your terminal emulation program and local telephone system.

What does Coming Soon mean?

Cities with this designation can expect to have an access point in the next couple of months. If the site is on this list, it means that the location has been approved and site preparation is in progress. NETCOM will not announce a telephone number or exchange until the access point is available to the customer community.

NETCOM is aggressively expanding the network in terms of bandwidth, number of modems, and number of local access points. However, it isn't possible to add sites in all our preferred locations. NETCOM hopes that one of the access plans will meet your Internet service needs.
