USC Information Sciences Institute (ISI)

Welcome to the home page for the Information Sciences Institute (ISI) of the University of Southern California

ISI, located at Marina del Rey approximately 15 miles from the main campus, is a research facility of the School of Engineering involved in a broad spectrum of information processing research and the development of advanced computer and communication technology and systems. The staff at ISI consists of full time researchers, about half at the Ph.D. level, a research/technical support staff of fifty, and twenty-five graduate research assistants. Additional personnel are associated with ISI as consultants or in other support activities. ISI maintains close academic ties with the school, particularly with the Departments of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. The institute provides a number of special research assistantships and students are encouraged to become involved in research relevant to their graduate work. ISI takes a system approach to problem solving; our end product is usually an experimental system as well as research papers. ISI has sponsored research projects underway in the areas of:

• software engineering
• artificial intelligence
• systems, systems performance, and systems software
• network protocols, personal teleconferencing, network security and gigabit LANS
• VLSI, VLSI reliability, low power circuits, and advanced packaging
• design automation

ISI runs the MOSIS and FAST brokerage services which provide custom and vendor chips and boards on an expedited basis in the latest technologies to the research community. In support of its many programs, ISI has substantial and powerful in-house computing capabilities. ISI provides the research project staff with a state-of-the-art collection of personal workstations and server systems that are interconnected on the LANs. ISI also houses an excellent technical library for research, and hardware development lab and model shop for developing special or experimental equipment in support of the Institute's programs.
